Are you ready for Turley, NM (Wines of the San Juan) and Four Corners Monument?

Monument Valley was serene but we found out that nature is natural and that comes with some unforeseen surprises but more on that later… Welcome to this episode of Leons’ Great Escape!

We left The Monument Valley early in the morning after downing a cup of joe courtesy of the front office at our KOA. Our target destination is a Harvest Host partner winery in Turley, New Mexico called Wines of the San Juan.

Harvest Host is a network of wineries, breweries, farms and museums that allow us to stay for free on their property. The catch, there is always a catch, is that you can only stay for a single night and it’s assumed that you’re going to take part in the festivities that they provide. The good news is that we happen to enjoy wine, beer, food and museums so win-win. We highly recommend Harvest Host to anyone looking to travel the states for a prolonged period of time. There is an annual fee to be a member which will currently run you $80 bucks. It’s well worth it and will pay for itself.

Looking at the map it turns out that a small detour would bring us to a unique location called the Four Corners Monument. This Monument marks the quadripoint in the Southwestern United States where the states of Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, and Utah meet. It is the only point in the US shared by four states which is what gave it the catchy name of “The Four Corners region” and for only 5 dollars per person, you can take a photo here.

You could have this photo at Four Corners Monument. What are you waiting for?

Now if you scour the internet you’ll find out that this location is hotly debated and could be as must as 2 and a half miles off the mark but suspend your disbelief, as we did, and you too could enjoy a photo such as this.

After we got a photo we hit the road (but not before cleaning the watermelon that exploded out of our fridge due to some bumpy roads [mental note: we need to find a better way to secure the fridge on drive days]).

The grounds of Wines of the San Juan are beautiful. They’re gracious as well and provide electricity free of change to Harvest Host members.

The entrance to Wines of the San Juan.

Wines of the San Juan is located in northern New Mexico close to the Navajo Dam. We were unaware but this area is renowned for its fly fishing and has a river running through it. Upon arriving we were greeted by the proprietors, Marsha and David, and a gal that worked there named Cindy. Cindy would eventually suggest that we try the green chili burger at the Sportsman Bar and Grill. You should also try this burger.

New Mexico’s state motto is the “Land of Enchantment” and Wines of the San Juan does not disappoint on that. You want trees and a meadow? Horses? A pond? Medal winning wine, peacocks?

If you find yourself in the area, then we highly recommend staying here or just grabbing a bottle or 10.
